History

Dr Renée Marcousé worked in museums between the 1940s and the 1980s. She had gained an MA at the University of Brussels and a Ph.D., studying English medieval sculpture at the Courtauld Institute, University of London. She worked at the Victoria and Albert Museum, becoming Director of Education Services. She was also a lecturer in the Education Department at University College Exeter. She published several works on museums and visual education and on medieval sculpture. She was actively involved in ICOM (the International Council of Museums), The Schools Council, The Board of Education and the Museums Association.

The collection contains manuscripts and papers from Marcousé’s work in museums, art and education and her personal interest in medieval sculptures and fonts. It includes her personal collection of journals and exhibition catalogues. It also contains her collection of photographs, slides, sound and film reels and school’s council curriculum study sets.

Whilst most of the collection is in English, some publications in it are in other European languages including French, German, Dutch, Russian and Hungarian.
