Heritage Open Days
Friday 10 - Saturday 11 September 2010
The Margaret Street School of Art building will be open to the public as part of this year's Heritage Open Day.
Co-ordinated and funded by English Heritage, Heritage Open Day celebrates England's architecture and culture by giving visitors a unique opportunity to explore a variety of sometimes overlooked and always interesting properties - all completely free of charge.
The Birmingham School of Art building in Margaret Street was opened in 1885. It is Grade I listed, and was designed by John Henry Chamberlain in an elaborate Venetian Gothic style. The internal and external decoration reflects John Ruskin's ideas on the variety of nature as the fount of all art.
Join us on 10 and 11 September to explore this wonderful building. There will be guided tours of the building and a chance to visit the Archives. Moreover, Heritage Open Day this year coincides with an exhibition by our MA students and another commemorating the 125th anniversary of the building.
On Friday, the building will be open from 10am to 3.30pm, with tours at 11am and 2pm. There will be another tour at 11am on Saturday, when we will be open from 10am to 3pm. All tours must be booked in advance.
Please call 0121 331 5970 to reserve a place on a tour or to obtain further details about the day's activities. For more general information about events throughout the UK, please go to www.heritageopendays.org.uk
