Arthur Lockwood - student days
21 April - 2 May 2008
Now best known as a painter of gritty industrial scenes, Arthur Lockwood completed both the Intermediate Course in Design and the National Diploma in Book Illustration at the Birmingham School of Art (1951-54) before going on to study graphic design at the Royal College of Art for three years (1956-59). This exhibition of his student work in Birmingham illustrated the variety of subjects and media he worked in as well as providing an insight into art teaching during the early 1950s.
Arts and Crafts at Birmingham School of Art
7 – 25 January 2008
Scheduled to coincide with the major Waterhall exhibition Art of Birmingham 1890-1939, this exhibition demonstrated the close involvement of staff and students at Birmingham School of Art with the ethos and style of the Arts and Crafts Movement at the end of the nineteenth century. Among the examples of designs for a range of media including enamels and metalwork, stained glass, embroidery, calligraphy and book illustration, it featured work by Arthur Gaskin, Charles March Gere and Florence Camm.
Poster showcase - To the Zoo
8-22 October 2007
This exhibition featured Underground posters advertising the Zoo that were commissioned by London Transport in the 1920s and 1930s. During this period, London Transport had a well-founded reputation for the quality of its advertising and publicity, and the Zoo was one of the most popular locations to feature on their posters. Both the wide variety of animals and the broad range of artistic styles shown reflected the way in which the choice of animal and style was often left to the individual artist.
