Research Issues in Art, Design and Media is edited by
Darren Newbury and Nick Stanley, and published by The
Research Training Initiative, Birmingham Institute of Art
and Design, University of Central England.
Research in art, design and media has grown rapidly in recent
years. New areas of inquiry are being opened up, new approaches
to research are being developed, and many new research projects
are being initiated. In this context there is increasingly a need
for reflection on the processes, methods and techniques appropriate
to these methodologically diverse fields, as well the objects
of research themselves. It this purpose that Research Issues
is conceived to serve. Research Issues will raise current
issues for research methodology and practice in the fields of
art, design and media, and provide researchers with insights which
have implications for their own studies.
Research Issues will publish:
The emphasis is on research taking place in art, design and media
contexts and the distinctive issues this raises rather than any
a priori commitment to the distinctiveness of research in art,
design, media itself.
Research Issues will be published three times a year
(Spring, Summer, Autumn). Each issue will consist of one paper
focused on a distinct topic and will provide guidance to further
reading and resources for further exploration. The primary audience
is research students, but the publication is also likely to be
of interest to research degree supervisors and other researchers
in art, design and media.
Research Issues will be available via the web in standard
html format for on-screen viewing, and in Adobe Acrobat (pdf)
format for downloading and printing. Past issues will be archived
on the site forming a useful resource for future researchers.
Research Issues is published as part of the Research
Training Initiative (RTI), a project initiated in 1995 to research
and publish resources of use to postgraduates conducting research
in art, design and related fields. Further information on RTI
can be found here.
