MA Digital Arts in Performance

MA Digital Arts in Performance is a new programme for the Department of Art in 2007/08 and taught in conjunction with the Birmingham Conservatoire.
If you are have a background in Art, Music or Performing Arts and are interested in developing your work through digital technology then this is the course for you.
Based at the Visualisation Research Unit at Margaret Street, there is unique opportunity for you to work with new technologies like motion capture, HD video, sensor based sonics, MIDI systems and distributed computing. The course also draws on the expertise and facilities from the Birmingham Conservatoire, where you are able to develop the quality and diversity of your work through the exploration of sound. You'll benefit from working alongside students from a variety of arts backgrounds, and together will look at experimentation and practice in Art, Music, Dance and other emerging practices through a technological perspective.

Course Content
Students on the programme will be involved in the development of interactive environments and time-based applications of technology for performance/ installation. The emphasis is on producing live experiences through applying digital technologies. The early part of the programme focuses on developing collaborative projects and enhancing and expanding the technological skills of students. The middle section of the programme experiments with different applications of technology in the arts, ranging from improvisation to installation practices, from the concert hall to the art gallery or dance studio. As a final project, students are able to work on a specific idea in the context of their choice, combining their understanding of technology with their expressive ideas through performance.

Assessment
The programme is a practice-based one, and assessment is therefore also based in the practical work produced by the student. The PG Cert stage includes collaborative work in smaller projects, with the Diploma stage demanding working models and scaled demonstrations of work, whilst the final MA stage requires students to create performance work for public presentation.
